The Alps

I spent most of the day today on the train, passing through Germany and on into Switzerland, witnessing the phenomenal change in elevation between below sea level and snow capped peaks. Even seeing rolling hills was strange, and ungeometric patterns of water. Makes the Netherlands seem all the more unique and human-controlled. We arrived in Interlaken in the dark, so no pictures of mountains yet. First impressions are that it is incredibly empty here; I had gotten so accustomed to wandering around, even late at night, in streets filled with people who seemed to have places to go. Here it is empty, cars drive fast, though they do stop religiously at crosswalks, and the pavement is predominantly asphalt, though we could see stone pavers peeking through. It is very much a tourist town, catering to skiers, of course; the air is clear and sharp, though, and what I could see of the mountains is incredible. I am very tired, looking forward to a long night of sleep.
